Short-range radar instruments provide a compact, non-contact distance measurement, and over-come particular environmental challenges.

With measurement repeatability of <100 microns and a typical working distance of 2-10 m, these devices are implemented in a breadth of applications including volumetric flow (based on water level) for sediment mass loading, tank level, and gathering tidal information.

High sampling rates (eg. 100 samples per second) make them ideal for dynamic data or burst data collection for structural deflection or displacement, and complementing accelerometer and other physical measurements
